On 8 June 2025, Bangladesh’s textile and apparel industry lost one of its most dynamic and visionary architects — Mr. Abdullah Hil Rakib, Managing Director of Team Group and former Director of BGMEA. He passed away in a tragic boating accident on Sturgeon Lake, Ontario, Canada, during a private trip. His untimely death sent a shockwave across the apparel sector both at home and abroad.

Mr. Rakib was more than a successful industrialist. He was a reformer, a champion of sustainability, a people-first leader, and an embodiment of ethical business in Bangladesh’s ready-made garments (RMG) sector. His absence leaves behind not just sorrow but a deep, irreplaceable void.
The Final Day: Tragedy at Sturgeon Lake
As per reports from the Ontario Provincial Police (OPP), Mr. Rakib was enjoying a peaceful boat ride with two others on Monday, 9 June, in the picturesque waters of Sturgeon Lake. The boat capsized, reportedly due to unstable waters and absence of safety gear. Tragically, Mr. Rakib and one other drowned before emergency services could reach them. One person survived.
His sudden departure under such circumstances has been described as “cruelly ironic” by many — a man who dedicated his life to creating safety, security, and progress for thousands, lost his own in such an unpredictable twist of fate.
The Final Goodbye
On Saturday, 14 June 2025, thousands gathered for his Namaz-e-Janaza, first held at 10:00 AM at the BGMEA Complex in Uttara, and later after Zohr at the DOHS Banani Field. He was laid to rest with profound honor at the Biman Bahini Shaheen Cemetery.
Crowds of workers, executives, family members, and industry colleagues stood in solemn unity — united by grief, respect, and shared loss. The silence spoke of how deeply he was loved.
Transforming the Textile Sector — Contribution by Contribution
Pioneering Green Manufacturing in Bangladesh
Long before “sustainability” became a buzzword, Abdullah Hil Rakib led Team Group to invest in green, eco-efficient manufacturing. Under his guidance:
Team Sourcing Unit-2 became one of the first LEED-certified green garment factories in Bangladesh, meeting global environmental standards.
- He implemented solar energy solutions, rainwater harvesting systems, and energy-efficient HVAC systems in multiple facilities.
- He pushed for zero-discharge wastewater management, ensuring his factories treated and reused water responsibly.
His message was clear: profit must not come at the expense of the planet.
Setting the Gold Standard in Compliance & Worker Well-being
Rakib Bhai didn’t treat compliance as a checklist — he treated it as culture.
He introduced gender-sensitive grievance mechanisms in his factories.
- Childcare centers, hygienic canteens, safe dormitories, and on-site clinics were established in several Team Group facilities.
- He personally monitored fire drill programs, chemical handling training, and electrical safety audits — working closely with Accord, Alliance, and third-party auditors.
He once told a young factory manager:
“If a worker doesn’t feel safe — no machine will run smoothly. Build their safety first.”
Investing in Education & Next-Gen Leadership
Education was deeply personal to him.
He launched the Team Education Support Fund, which funded schooling for over 1,000 workers’ children in Gazipur and Narayanganj.
- Through partnerships with universities like BUFT, AUST, and BGMEA University, he offered internships and leadership fellowships for students in textile engineering and industrial management.
- He personally mentored dozens of young professionals, often offering scholarships or job placements.
His belief: “Factories must produce people too — not just garments.”
Elevating Bangladesh’s Image on the Global Stage
Rakib Bhai was a frequent speaker at:
Textile Asia (Pakistan)
- Sourcing Journal conferences (USA)
- Global Fashion Agenda (Copenhagen)
- Meetings with global brands like H&M, Next, Decathlon, Bestseller, and Inditex
He represented Bangladesh not only as a manufacturer but as a thought leader on ethical sourcing, climate accountability, and digital transformation in apparel. He spoke fluently in brand language — balancing commercial understanding with the realities of factory floors.
As a Director of BGMEA, he:
Advocated for simplified bonded warehouse licenses
- Helped draft new labor code revisions aligned with ILO standards
- Championed digitization in SME garment factories through policy lobbying
He was instrumental in rebuilding international trust after the Rana Plaza tragedy — actively involved in Accord/Alliance negotiations and reforms.
A Leader of Compassion, Not Just Command
Those who worked with him say the same thing: he listened. Whether you were a pattern master or a production head, he gave you the same attention.
He remembered birthdays, asked about workers’ children by name, and walked the production lines without entourage or pretense. In his own words:
“Respect isn’t about hierarchy. It’s about humanity.”
His ability to lead with empathy and clarity made him beloved and respected alike. Even competitors admired his dignity.
The Legacy Lives On
Today, Team Group stands strong — not just as a manufacturer, but as a living legacy of his values.
His impact ripples through:
Thousands of safe, happy workers
- Innovative factory models that reduce carbon footprints
- A generation of young professionals he mentored
- A national industry more confident on the global stage

May Abdullah Hil Rakib’s soul find eternal peace.May his leadership continue to guide the textile sector. And may we, in every factory, every policy room, and every worker’s life, remember what he stood for:
“The business of garments is not just about stitching fabric. It’s about weaving lives.”
