Bangladesh now has 173 LEED-certified RMG factories & 550+ in the pipeline

Two RMG units get recognized as green- Aman Tex Ltd & Ayesha Fashion Ltd.

Desk Report: The United States Green Building Council (USGBC) has recognized two more readymade garment factories in Bangladesh as green, raising the total number of environment-friendly establishments in the apparel sector to 173. The latest, Two RMG units get recognized as green- Aman Tex Ltd & Ayesha Fashion Ltd. were rated with LEED Platinum certification.

The Bangladesh Garment Manufacturers and Exporters Association (BGMEA) on Monday informed journalists about the achievement. The factories received the Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED) certificates from the USGBC on 12 December last year (2021), it said.

Bangladesh is the global leader having the highest number of green garment buildings, where 54 are platinum rated, 105 gold rated, 10 silver, and 4 have no rating. Dozens more units are in the process of achieving LEED certification. Out of the top 10 USGBC LEED certified factories, 8 are in Bangladesh.

The council honors factories based on several criteria – transformation performance, energy, water, and waste management. The best performers are rated platinum, followed by gold and silver.

Now, Bangladesh has the largest number of green factories in the world and it is growing even more said, Mohiuddin Rubel, Director, BGMEA. He also said that they are moving towards a sustainable and green infrastructure in the apparel sector.
