Bangladesh has retained its position as the second-largest apparel supplier to the United States, reinforcing its importance in the global apparel supply chain despite a challenging global economic environment. According to the latest US apparel import data for January–May 2026, Bangladesh recorded exports worth US$3.25 billion, maintaining its strong presence in one of its most important export markets.

The latest figures reflect a significant transformation in global sourcing patterns as international buyers continue to diversify supply chains. The most notable development is the sharp decline in China’s apparel exports to the US. China recorded a 42.75% decrease, with exports falling to US$2.80 billion, highlighting the accelerating shift of sourcing away from the world’s traditional manufacturing hub.
Vietnam remained the leading apparel supplier to the US during the first five months of 2026, with exports reaching US$6.39 billion, supported by a modest 1.46% growth.
Although Bangladesh experienced an 8.08% year-on-year decline in export growth, the country continued to outperform China in total export value, demonstrating its resilience and strategic importance in global sourcing. Industry experts believe Bangladesh’s large-scale manufacturing capacity, competitive pricing, improving sustainability performance, and expanding value-added product portfolio continue to make it a preferred sourcing destination for international brands and retailers.
Meanwhile, regional competitors are strengthening their positions. Cambodia recorded an impressive 14.90% growth, while Indonesia achieved 5.49% growth, reflecting increasing competition among South and Southeast Asian apparel-producing countries.
The latest data suggests that the ongoing restructuring of global supply chains presents significant opportunities for Bangladesh. As US brands seek to reduce dependence on a single sourcing destination, Bangladesh is well positioned to capture additional market share. However, sustaining long-term competitiveness will require continued investment in product diversification, automation, digital transformation, innovation, and faster lead times.
Industry stakeholders emphasize that Bangladesh must capitalize on its strengths in sustainable manufacturing, operational efficiency, and value-added production to secure future growth in an increasingly competitive global marketplace.
With global sourcing dynamics continuing to evolve, Bangladesh’s ability to retain its second position in the US market demonstrates the country’s resilience and reinforces its role as one of the world’s leading apparel manufacturing and export destinations.
