BGMEA appoints Major General Shahedul Islam as Secretary General

Major General Dr. Md. Shahedul Islam (Retd.) has assumed office as Secretary General of the Bangladesh Garment Manufacturers and Exporters Association (BGMEA), the apex trade body representing the country’s readymade garment (RMG) sector.

A seasoned professional with more than 35 years of experience in military leadership, international diplomacy and academia, Shahedul Islam brings extensive expertise to the association, said a press release.

During his military career, he served as Bangladesh’s Defence Attaché in Washington, D.C., for which he received the prestigious Legion of Merit award from the United States. He earned a PhD from University of Dhaka on workers’ skills assessment and development, alongside an MPhil and an MBA. He also holds a Master’s degree in Management Studies from Osmania University.

Major General Shahedul Islam previously served as Dean at the Bangladesh University of Professionals and as Treasurer and Professor at the Central University of Science and Technology. He also participated in several United Nations Peacekeeping missions. BGMEA leaders expressed confidence that his experience in diplomacy, strategic leadership and workforce development would help strengthen the country’s RMG industry, foster innovation, develop skilled human resources and address evolving global challenges.

After assuming office, Shahedul Islam said he would work closely with the BGMEA Board and garment entrepreneurs to address global economic challenges, promote product and market diversification, and strengthen skill development to enhance Bangladesh’s competitiveness in the international apparel market.
