The Bangladesh Garment Manufacturers and Exporters Association (BGMEA) held a solemn and grand condolence meeting this evening at Mahbub Ali Hall, BGMEA, Chattogram, in honor of its esteemed former President, Mostafa Golam Quddus, who passed away on January 25, 2025.
Presided by BGMEA Administrator Anwar Hossain, the gathering was attended by office bearers, BGMEA members, officials, executives, and the family members of Mostafa Golam Quddus, who were present as guests of honor.
Speakers at the event paid heartfelt tributes, highlighting Mr. Quddus’s immense contributions to the growth and transformation of Bangladesh’s RMG sector. They emphasized his pivotal role in addressing critical industry challenges, leaving a lasting impact on the sector.
One of his most remarkable achievements was the historic eradication of child labor from the RMG sector.
At a time when the industry faced an existential crisis due to the Child Labor Deterrence Bill introduced by U.S. Senator Tom Harkin, Mr. Quddus led an unprecedented effort to remove child workers from factories and enroll them in schools with stipends.
His tireless advocacy resulted in the signing of the Child Labor Deterrence MOU, averting a potential U.S. ban on Bangladeshi RMG exports and safeguarding the industry’s future.
Speakers lauded his enduring contributions, stating that his leadership and reputation significantly enhanced Bangladesh’s global competitiveness.
