BGMEA President seeks Bangladesh High Commission’s support to explore more trade opportunities in Canadian market

The Bangladesh Garment Manufacturers and Exporters Association (BGMEA) has sought the support of Bangladesh High Commission in Canada in exploring more trade opportunities in the Canadian market, including RMG exports.

The call was made when the High Commissioner of Bangladesh to Canada Dr. Khalilur Rahman paid a visit to BGMEA President Faruque Hassan at BGMEA Complex in Dhaka on January 11.

BGMEA Vice President Shahiduallah Azim, Director Abdullah Hil Rakib and Chair of BGMEA Standing Committee on UD-Woven & Knit Md. Nurul Islam were also present at the meeting.

They had discussions about the current state of affairs in the RMG industry, especially how the sector had been navigating through a rough patch during recent times due to the depressive global economy and rising inflation.

Their talks also focused on trade opportunities in the Canadian market and how to seize them.

BGMEA President Faruque Hassan apprised the envoy about how the RMG industry had been able to turn around and continue its move despite all the challenges posed by the Covid-19 pandemic and the global geopolitical tensions.

Faruque Hassan requested the High Commissioner to intensify diplomatic efforts to boost bilateral relationships between the two countries and ensure trade benefits for Bangladesh in the Canadian market after the graduation from the least developed country (LDC) category.

He also called for the High Commission’s support in increasing the share of RMG exports in a potential market like Canada, especially in the area of high-end and diversified apparel products.

Faruque Hassan also requested cooperation from Dr. Khalilur Rahman in promoting Bangladesh and the RMG industry in Canada.
