BGMEA recommends closing of all factories


Bangladesh Garment Manufacturers and Exporters Association president Dr. Rubana Huq on 26th March 2020 recommended that all the BGMEA members should announce closure of their factories in line with the government’s announcement of public holiday due to prevent coronavirus.

Government already announced a public holiday between March 29 and April 4. But the garments factories were open. Finally BGMEA President Dr. Rubana Huq recommended BGMEA members to close the factories for safety issue. Earlier Bangladesh Knitwear Manufacturers and Exporters Association (BKMEA) president urged BKMEA members’ factory to close the factories.

After approval of BGMEA board of directors, the association president sent a letter to its members saying that Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina in her address to the nation on the occasion of the Independence Day issued specific directions to all and asked for some awareness steps for safety of good health of all. ‘As the biggest industry of the country, we should set instance following the prime minister’s directions. In these circumstances, I hope that you would consider the closure of your factories,’ the letter read.

Bangladesh textile industry is passing a very challenging time regarding order cancellation from the buyers. BGMEA president released different video messages to buyers, members and Prime Minster for support the industry in this critical situation. Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina announced a stimulus package of Taka 5,000 crore for export-oriented industries to fight the impact of coronavirus on the country’s economy on her open speech to the nation. BGMEA has expressed heartfelt gratitude to Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina for declaring a stimulus package of Taka 5,000 crore for the export-oriented industries of the country.
