BGMEA urges urgent aid, compensation following HSIA cargo fire

Inamul Haq Khan, Senior Vice President of the Bangladesh Garment Manufacturers and Exporters Association (BGMEA), today urged the authorities concerned to provide immediate and comprehensive cooperation and compensation for entrepreneurs severely affected by the cargo village fire at Hazrat Shahjalal International Airport (HSIA).

“Industry representatives are pressing for specific measures to address the widespread damage. Key demands include overall cooperation and compensation arrangements for affected entrepreneurs,” he said.

Furthermore, he called for the rapid arrangement of new shipments to ensure the uninterrupted continuation of activities within the garment industry.

The BGMEA Senior Vice President made these remarks in front of the fire-ravaged cargo village area at Hazrat Shahjalal International Airport in Dhaka after visiting the damaged site.

In his speech, Inamul Haq Khan expressed the deep concern of the BGMEA Board and described the fire incident as extremely unfortunate.

He emphasized that the disaster has severely impacted the country’s export trade, particularly affecting the crucial garment industry.

To assess the extent of the losses, he said BGMEA is currently working to evaluate the damage and collect necessary information.

To expedite data collection, he mentioned that letters have been sent to members requesting a list of lost products in a specified format.

He also added that an online data collection portal has been opened.

Following the completion of data gathering, he confirmed that BGMEA plans to hold a coordination meeting very soon.

This meeting will involve key stakeholders, including the Ministry of Civil Aviation and Tourism, airport authorities, Customs, and other relevant organizations, he added.

Finally, the Senior Vice President urged all concerned parties and industrial factories to remain cautious and vigilant about fire safety, noting the increased risks during the ongoing dry season.
