BKMEA inaugurated its Water Cell yesterday (3 October 2026) to strengthen the industry’s role in responsible water management. The inauguration was held alongside an awareness and consultation session on Water Stewardship in Bangladesh’s knitwear sector.

Organized jointly by WaterAid Bangladesh and BKMEA with support from the Embassy of Sweden in Dhaka, the program brought together representatives from the knitwear industry, BKMEA and international brands.

BKMEA Director Engr. Md. Belayet Hossain represented BKMEA during the inaugural session. The day-long program featured technical discussions and group activities on measuring and reducing water consumption, increasing water reuse and preventing pollution, along with exploring opportunities to develop water-efficiency initiatives into viable and investment-ready projects.

In his closing remarks, BKMEA Executive President Ehsan Fazlee Shamim emphasized that water management should not be viewed solely from a business perspective; it is also an ethical responsibility. He highlighted that the impacts of water misuse and pollution ultimately affect our country, communities and people, making responsible water use a collective responsibility.

The initiative is expected to strengthen awareness, capacity and collaboration on responsible water management across Bangladesh’s knitwear sector.
