Digital Product Passport (DPP): Transforming the Future of the Global Textile & Apparel Industry

The global textile and apparel industry is undergoing a major transformation driven by increasing consumer awareness, stricter environmental regulations, and growing demand for supply chain transparency. At the center of this transformation is the Digital Product Passport (DPP)—a secure digital record that tracks comprehensive product information throughout its entire lifecycle, from raw material sourcing to recycling. Accessible through technologies such as QR codes and RFID, the DPP ensures that trusted and verified product information is available to all stakeholders. While the European Union is leading the implementation of DPP, its impact is expected to reshape global supply chains, making it increasingly important for manufacturers and exporters worldwide.

A Digital Product Passport contains critical information, including product identification, fiber composition, country of origin, supply chain traceability, environmental footprint, chemical compliance, certifications, care instructions, repairability, recycled content, circularity data, and end-of-life disposal recommendations. This comprehensive dataset improves transparency across the value chain while supporting regulatory compliance and sustainability reporting.

The Digital Product Passport (DPP) offers numerous benefits. It provides complete supply chain transparency, enabling stakeholders to understand product origins and verify sustainability claims. It strengthens consumer trust by offering transparent and reliable product information while helping businesses comply with evolving sustainability regulations. For manufacturers, DPP enhances traceability, reducing risks associated with unauthorized subcontracting and counterfeit products. It also supports the transition to a circular economy by facilitating product repair, reuse, and recycling while improving environmental, social, and governance (ESG) reporting. Furthermore, early adoption of DPP can provide companies with a competitive advantage by positioning them as preferred suppliers in an increasingly sustainability-focused global market.

South Asia has a significant opportunity to strengthen its position in the global apparel industry through the adoption of Digital Product Passports. By enhancing supply chain transparency, sustainability performance, and international market competitiveness, the region can meet the growing expectations of global buyers. Meanwhile, Europe continues to lead DPP implementation through circular economy initiatives and comprehensive regulatory frameworks, while North America is rapidly advancing digital traceability and responsible sourcing practices in response to evolving market demands and consumer expectations.

However, successful implementation of Digital Product Passports comes with several challenges. These include investing in digital infrastructure, ensuring data accuracy and verification, integrating systems across supply chain partners, addressing cybersecurity and data governance issues, developing employee capabilities, standardizing product information, and fostering collaboration among brands, suppliers, and technology providers.

For South Asian manufacturers, the Digital Product Passport should not be viewed merely as a compliance requirement but as a strategic business opportunity. Companies that invest today in digital traceability systems, strengthen ESG data management, and improve supply chain transparency will be better positioned to compete in international markets. Investment in digital transformation, workforce development, and collaborative partnerships will enable manufacturers to build more resilient, transparent, and sustainable supply chains while enhancing long-term competitiveness.

The Digital Product Passport represents the next evolution of product transparency in the textile and apparel industry. It empowers informed decision-making, strengthens trust between businesses and consumers, improves supply chain visibility, and contributes to more sustainable production and consumption practices.

“The future of global apparel manufacturing will be defined not only by product quality but also by the quality, credibility, and accessibility of product information.”
