Discussion Held on Economic Diplomacy and Bangladesh’s Future Economic Strategy

A significant discussion titled “Economic Diplomacy and Bangladesh’s Future Economic Strategy” was held at the Pan Pacific Sonargaon Hotel in Dhaka, bringing together senior government officials, policymakers, and economic experts to deliberate on the country’s long-term economic direction.

Speakers at the event emphasized that the importance of economic diplomacy has increased substantially amid growing global trade fragmentation, protectionist policies, and evolving geopolitical dynamics. They noted that coordinated efforts involving trade, foreign policy, and domestic economic reforms are essential to maintaining competitiveness and ensuring sustainable economic growth.

Particular emphasis was placed on addressing the challenges Bangladesh will face following its graduation from Least Developed Country (LDC) status. Participants identified the successful negotiation of new trade agreements, export diversification, attraction of foreign direct investment (FDI), and the maintenance of macroeconomic stability as key national priorities.

The discussion also highlighted the need to strengthen governance in the banking and financial sectors, foster a business-friendly environment, expand the adoption of green technologies, and enhance regional cooperation to support sustainable development.

The event was inaugurated by Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir, Minister of Local Government, Rural Development and Cooperatives.

Among the distinguished guests present were:

  • Amir Khasru Mahmud Chowdhury, Minister of Finance
  • Dr. Khalilur Rahman, Minister of Foreign Affairs and President-elect of the 81st Session of the United Nations General Assembly
  • Shama Obayed Islam, State Minister for Foreign Affairs

  • Dr. Mahdi Amin, Adviser for Education, Expatriates’ Welfare and Overseas Employment, and Labour and Employment
  • Chowdhury Ashik Mahmud Bin Harun, Executive Chairman of the Bangladesh Investment Development Authority (BIDA)

The speakers observed that the future of Bangladesh’s economic diplomacy will extend beyond trade promotion and will evolve into a comprehensive strategy encompassing investment, technology, employment generation, sustainable development, and international cooperation. They expressed confidence that such an integrated approach would serve as a foundation for the country’s long-term economic progress and enhance Bangladesh’s competitiveness in the global arena.
