Eastern University Students Honored for Success in Monroe E. Price Media Law and the Prestigious Philip C. Jessup International Moot Court Competitions

Eastern University proudly represented Bangladesh in the international rounds of the Philip C. Jessup International Law Moot Court Competition 2025. With the participation of 805 universities from 104 countries, this was the largest edition in the 66-year history of the competition. Prior to that, Eastern University qualified from the Bangladesh National Rounds, which saw record participation from 44 universities. Demonstrating impressive legal skills, the team emerged as runners-up in the national round. In addition to this remarkable achievement, one student from Eastern University earned the “Best Mooter” title by achieving the highest score among 88 participants in the preliminary rounds. Another team from Eastern University qualified for the international rounds of the Monroe E. Price Media Law Moot Court Competition 2024–25, marking the first time a team from the university reached this level. Notably, Eastern University is the only university from Bangladesh to participate in this year’s competition, a distinction previously held solely by the University of Dhaka.

On Friday, May 16, 2025, a felicitation ceremony was held at Eastern University’s Rezakul Haider Hall to honor the law students for their international success. The event also included the award ceremony for the 5th Intra-Department Moot Court Competition organized by the Faculty of Law. The Chief Guest, Honorable Justice Khizir Ahmed Chowdhury of the High Court Division, Supreme Court of Bangladesh, emphasized the importance of moot court activities in enhancing legal skills and praised the university’s continued success in international competitions like Jessup, Henry Dunant, Monroe E. Price (Oxford), and Stetson. He commended both students and faculty for elevating Bangladesh’s presence on the global stage and appreciated the Faculty of Law’s contributions to legal excellence and justice. Professor Md. Shamsul Huda, Acting Vice Chancellor, also addressed the gathering, stating that such competitions play a vital role in preparing students for their legal careers. He described the intra-departmental competition as the starting point for developing legal proficiency.

Dr. Khaled Hamid Chowdhury, Senior Advocate of the Appellate Division of the Bangladesh Supreme Court, urged the university to maintain its standards and excellence. The event opened with a speech by Mohammad Mamunur Rashid, Chair of the Department of Law, and Dr. Abul Bashar Khan, Registrar, who praised the students for their outstanding achievements at the international level. Mr. A.B.M. Imdadul Haque Khan, Dean of the Faculty of Law, presided over the program. Speakers expressed their joy over the department’s success and wished the students continued success in their future endeavors. Lecturer Omar Faruq Tamim, Moot Court Society Coordinator, hosted the event.

Students Mahir Chowdhury Abir and Sakib Khondaker shared their experiences representing Eastern University at the Jessup competition in Washington D.C., often referred to as the “World Cup of Mooting.” Students Raisa Chowdhury and Riasat Azim spoke about their participation in the Monroe E. Price Media Law Moot Court Competition.

In the 2025 Jessup Competition, Eastern University delivered an outstanding performance in the Memorial (Written Argument) category. The university ranked 74th, surpassing submissions from globally renowned institutions such as the University of Oxford (UK), University of Chicago (USA), University of Toronto (Canada), New York University (USA), University of Glasgow (UK), University of Oslo (Norway), and even the runner-up of this year’s Jessup Cup, the National University of Kyiv-Mohyla Academy (Ukraine).

From March 28 to April 6, the international rounds of the competition were held at the Hyatt Regency in Washington D.C., where Eastern University competed in legal debates against world-renowned institutions including University of Oxford and Tashkent State University of Law (Uzbekistan).

The Monroe E. Price Media Law Moot Court Competition, established in 2008, is one of the most prestigious global mooting competitions. Eastern University represented Bangladesh at the international round, held at the Bonavero Institute of Human Rights, University of Oxford. The regional rounds were organized by the National Law University Delhi, in collaboration with the Centre for Communication Governance, NLU Delhi, and the Bonavero Institute of Human Rights.
