Eid bonus, salaries paid in all factories, says BGMEA

Bangladesh Garment Manufacturers and Exporters Association( BGMEA) organized a press briefing on May 12 to brief the media on the overall situation of the RMG industry ahead of Eid-ul-Fitr.

Newly BGMEA President Faruque Hassan thanked all, including the RMG entrepreneurs, for timely making payments to the workers. He also extended his thanks to the government for taking necessary steps in fighting COVID-19.

Around 99 percent of the garment factories have paid the salary & bonus and the rest will complete the payment by today said, Faruque Hassan

He also said, due to pandemic, exports fell by an unprecedented 18% in the last financial year to the current financial year. In the first 10 months, exports declined by a further 6.62%. The export crisis has reached a climax, especially in the woven sector. Current July-April of the financial year, the export of woven garments decreased by 16.84%,

He requested to re-extend the loan repayment period under an incentive package for payment of workers’ salary allowance. To provide the opportunity to pay through 30 installments in 3 years instead of 18 installments in 2 years. The BGMEA president urged the government to keep source tax at 0.25% from 0.50 % for the next five years in the upcoming budget.
