Desk Report:European statistics organization EUROSTAT has published the latest apparel import statistics for the period of January-August, 2022. As per the data, EU’s import from Bangladesh witnessed the highest growth among all the top countries. During the mentioned period, European Union imported 15.37 billion dollars’ worth of clothing from Bangladesh, whereas their import from the world was worth 67.18 billion dollars. Bangladesh remained the 2nd largest apparel import source for Europe with 22.89% share of EU’s total apparel import. EU’s apparel import from Bangladesh has increased by 45.26% during the first eight months of 2022 compared to the same period of 2021.

China, being the top apparel import source for EU and having 28.06 % share, registered 26.59% Y-O-Y growth. EU’s apparel imports from China reached USD 18.85billion dollars in January-August, 2022.
Turkey is the 3rd largest source for EU posted 20.38% growth during the same period. EU’s import from Turkey grew by 16.97%. At the same time, EU imported 3.56 billion dollars worth apparel from India. EU’s import from India grew by 28.85% compared to the previous year. Other top countries having high growth were Cambodia 42.21%, Pakistan 31.34%, and Indonesia 35.41%.

BGMEA Director Mohiuddin Rubel said, “Bangladesh’s apparel export to EU countries was always good and we are doing well. We will see slow in apparel export after August due to Covid-19 pandemic situation.” “But, we are apprehended over the growth due to the higher inflation caused by the Russia-Ukraine war and post-Covid situation,” he added.
