Abstract
Bangladesh, a global hub for textile manufacturing, faces a critical crossroad as environmental sustainability becomes central to global trade and consumer expectations. This article explores the role of green chemistry in transforming Bangladesh’s screen printing industry, examining market demand, technological constraints, innovations in sustainable materials, and strategies for overcoming adoption challenges. Special attention is given to eco-friendly printing on jute fabrics and home textiles, showcasing Bangladesh’s potential leadership in sustainable textile solutions.

1. Introduction
Bangladesh’s textile and garment industry accounts for more than 84% of export earnings and contributes over 13% to GDP, with over 4,500 garment factories and 883 textile printing units. In response to global sustainability imperatives, the industry is gradually shifting toward green chemistry-based practices, particularly in the screen printing sector.
2. Market Dynamics: Demand and Supply Trends
2.1 Rising Demand for Sustainable Screen Printing
Consumer demand for eco-friendly textile products is fueling transformation in screen printing technologies. A report by 6Wresearch (2025) forecasts a CAGR of 3.42% for Bangladesh’s custom-printed t-shirt market between 2025 and 2031.
2.2 Supply-Side Constraints
Despite positive demand trends, several supply issues hamper growth:
- Outdated Machinery: About 45% of home textile units still use legacy systems.
- Energy Disruptions: Daily power outages (avg. 4.8 hours) reduce capacity by up to 22%.
- Raw Material Dependency: Heavy reliance on imported cotton increases vulnerability to global price shocks.
3. Innovations in Green Chemistry for Screen Printing
3.1 Natural Dyes and Thickeners
Recent research (Taylor & Francis, 2022) highlights rose petals, teak leaves, and tamarind seed husks as viable dye sources. When paired with guar gum and mango seed powder, these natural thickeners provide:
- High color fastness
- Improved print resolution
- Enhanced biodegradability
3.2 Silicone-Modified Binders
Silicone poly-acrylate binders exhibit superior elasticity, wash durability, and fiber adhesion, outperforming petroleum-based binders in environmental and performance metrics (Science Publishing Group, 2016).
3.3 Soy-Based Printing Chemicals
According to Textile Focus (2024), soy-based chemicals can substitute petroleum-derived components, offering a renewable, biodegradable, and locally manufacturable alternative.
3.4 Digital and Supercritical Fluid Dyeing
- Digital Textile Printing: Reduces water, chemical waste, and energy use.
- Supercritical CO₂ Dyeing (SFD): Eliminates water from the dyeing process, creating zero-effluent systems (RMG Bangladesh, 2024).
4. Application Areas: Jute and Home Textiles
4.1 Screen Printing on Jute Fabric
As a leading jute producer, Bangladesh can pioneer eco-printing on jute for fashion and home decor. Azo-free dyes and water-based binders show strong compatibility with jute’s coarse fibers, expanding market potential in eco-conscious segments.
4.2 Home Textile Printing
Home textiles such as curtains, linens, and cushions benefit from:
- Hypoallergenic inks
- Low-VOC binders
- Compliance with REACH and OEKO-TEX® standards
This enhances Bangladesh’s appeal in high-margin export markets.
5. Challenges to Green Chemistry Adoption
Key barriers include:
- High CapEx Requirements for green machinery.
- Limited R&D Infrastructure in sustainable chemicals and dyes.
- Weak Regulatory Incentives and enforcement of environmental standards.
- Low Consumer Awareness in the domestic market.
6. Strategic Roadmap for Sustainable Growth
6.1 Strengthen Policy and Incentives
Enact enforceable green regulations and provide tax breaks or low-interest loans for green tech adoption.
6.2 Encourage Public-Private R&D
Boost collaboration among universities, manufacturers, and government labs to innovate cost-effective eco-printing solutions.
6.3 Train the Workforce
Develop targeted green chemistry training for machine operators, designers, and quality controllers.
6.4 Expand Sustainable Branding
Promote eco-labelling, consumer awareness campaigns, and international marketing efforts focused on “Green Made in Bangladesh” textiles.
7. Conclusion
Green chemistry offers Bangladesh a unique opportunity to lead the global transition to sustainable textile printing, especially in screen printing on jute and home textiles. Through coordinated investment, innovation, and policy reform, Bangladesh can turn environmental responsibility into a competitive advantage.
