DHAKA, June 10, 2026 (BSS) – Germany has expressed strong interest in expanding cooperation with Bangladesh in energy diversification, renewable energy development, infrastructure modernization and sustainable economic growth.
The interest was reiterated today by Frank Hartmann, Director General for Asia and the Pacific at the German Federal Foreign Office, during a meeting with Commerce Minister Khandakar Abdul Muktadir at the latter’s office in the city, said a press release.
Hartmann praised Bangladesh’s steady economic progress and ongoing reform initiatives, saying the country’s efforts to diversify energy sources, expand renewable energy capacity and modernize infrastructure would lay a solid foundation for long-term sustainable growth.
He said both the German government and private sector are keen to support Bangladesh’s development agenda, particularly in energy transition, green technology and infrastructure development.
The German official also highlighted the potential for further expanding economic cooperation between Bangladesh and the European Union.
Discussions during the meeting covered the continuation of trade benefits and market access for Bangladesh after its graduation from the Least Developed Country (LDC) category through GSP Plus facilities and a possible Free Trade Agreement (FTA).
Muktadir welcomed greater German engagement, noting that Bangladesh is undertaking extensive reforms to create a more investment-friendly environment by simplifying business procedures, strengthening infrastructure and enhancing energy security.
He said Bangladesh is also committed to increasing investment in renewable energy and is moving forward with plans to develop 10,000 megawatts of solar power generation capacity, offering significant opportunities for foreign investors and technology partners.
Both sides expressed optimism about further deepening Bangladesh-Germany cooperation in trade, investment, industrialization, green technology and sustainable development.
German Ambassador to Bangladesh Rüdiger Lotz and senior officials of the Ministry of Commerce were present at the meeting.
