High-Level seminar titled “Strategic Discussion on Advancing the Bangladesh–Japan (EPA)

Japan Bangladesh Chamber high-level seminar titled “Strategic Discussion on Advancing the Bangladesh–Japanof commerce and Industry (JBCCI), in collaboration with JCIAD & JETRO Dhaka, with the support of HSBC, successfully organized a high-level seminar titled “Strategic Discussion on Advancing the Bangladesh–Japan Economic Partnership Agreement (EPA)” on April 20, 2026, at The Westin Dhaka. The event brought together members from JBCCI, JCIAD, distinguished representatives from JETRO, the Embassy of Japan in Bangladesh, JICA, and key stakeholders from both public and private sectors.

The seminar served as an important platform to discuss strategic priorities, opportunities, and the evolving framework of the Bangladesh–Japan Economic Partnership Agreement (EPA), as well as actionable initiatives to accelerate implementation. The program was attended by more than 180 participants. The program commenced with a welcome address by Mr. Manabu Sugawara, President of JCIAD.

Key presentations included: Mr. Kazuiki Kataoka, Country Representative of JETRO Dhaka, who delivered an insightful presentation on “Bangladesh–Japan Economic Partnership Agreement (EPA) and advancing the agreement toward enhanced economic development.”  Mr. Tareq Rafi Bhuiyan (Jun), President of JBCCI who highlighted JBCCI’s engagement and policy advocacy, outlining the organization’s contributions and strategic role in advancing the EPA for the past 7 years.

A major highlight of the seminar was a dynamic panel discussion moderated by Ms. Maria Howlader, FCA, Secretary General of JBCCI. The session provided valuable insights into policy frameworks, investment opportunities, and the broader economic significance of the EPA, along with key insights on opportunities and challenges for specific sectors such as automobile, RMG, agriculture, and logistics.

Mr. Yuji Wagata, Vice President, JCIAD, Chief Representative, Toyota Tsusho Bangladesh.

Mr. M. A. Jabbar, Managing Director, DBL Group

Ms. Uzma Chowdhury, Chairperson, Meghna Bank, Director, PRAN-RFL Group.

Mr. Asif A. Chowdhury, Past President, JBCCI/ CEO & Managing Director of CHOWDHURY GROUP.

H.E. Mr. Shinichi Saida, Hon’ble Ambassador of Japan to Bangladesh, attended as a Special Guest and appreciated JETRO Dhaka, JCIAD, and Japan-Bangladesh Chamber of Commerce and Industry (JBCCI) for organizing the seminar, while honoring the late Commerce Secretary for his contributions to the EPA. He highlighted the EPA as a long-term strategic framework driving investment, industrial growth, and early economic momentum, and emphasized the importance of political stability and reforms. He reaffirmed Japan’s commitment to Bangladesh as a strategic partner in the Indo-Pacific region.

The seminar was honored by the presence of the Chief Guest, H. E. Mr. Khandaker Abdul Muktadir, Hon’ble Minister of Commerce,

He highlighted the Bangladesh–Japan EPA as a milestone to strengthen bilateral trade and investment, emphasizing Bangladesh’s young, resilient population and strong economic potential. He also outlined key reform priorities and invited Japanese investors to explore opportunities, expressing confidence in a deeper long-term economic partnership.

The program concluded with closing remarks by Mr. Hiroaki Oura, Vice President of JBCCI, who expressed appreciation to all distinguished guests, speakers, participants, and sponsored organization. The event ended with a networking session over high tea, fostering meaningful engagement and collaboration among attendees.

Overall, the seminar served as a significant platform for strengthening Bangladesh–Japan economic relations and reaffirmed a shared commitment to implementing a comprehensive and forward-looking Economic Partnership Agreement.
