Highest number of green garment factories in Bangladesh

Bangladesh RMG industry is now standing at a cross road of becoming the global leader, also facing growing challenges in the area of sustainability, climate change, groundwater depletion, efficiency and many more. Green Industrialization is one of BGMEA’s many initiatives to take the sustainability stride of the industry to the next level.

According to BGMEA, Bangladesh has the highest number of green apparel factories within the world. U.S. Green Building Council’s Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED) is the most widely used green building rating system in the world.

According to USGBC  for LEED total 110 points across 7 criteria including Sustainable sites, Water efficiency, energy and atmosphere, Materials and resources, Indoor environmental quality, Innovation and design process, Regional priority credits

According to USGBC,  144 LEED Certified Green Garment Factories in Bangladesh. 9 out of the world’s top 10 green garment factories are in Bangladesh 39 out of the world’s top 100 green industrial project in Bangladesh 500 more factories are in the process of getting LEED certification.

According to BGMEA, 58% of the factories are Woven, 28% are Knit, 10% are Knit-Woven and the rest 4% are Sweater.

Most of factories are located in Dhaka, followed by Gazipur, Chattogram and Narayanganj .Bangladesh Garment Manufacturers and Exporters Association (BGMEA) has been awarded the 2021 USGBC Leadership Award by the US Green Building Council (USGBC) for green initiatives in the apparel industry.

USGBC announced the awardees from around the world. They were awarded for innovations in sustainability for healthy, equitable, and resilient buildings and communities .

Green factory building is a commendable effort to amplify the positive and minimize the negative impacts of it throughout its entire life cycle, with foremost concentration in energy use, water use, indoor environmental quality, material selection and its effects on the site

BGMEA maintain close collaboration with USGBC to exchange data, information on green factory building coordinate with certification bodies to smoothen certification process for the member or any other support factory may requires.
