Bangladesh has set an ambitious target to achieve $100 billion in apparel exports by 2030, reflecting the country’s strategic importance in the global textile and garment industry. To elaborate on this goal, several key factors and initiatives need to be considered. Particularly establishing a strong apparel brand ‘Made in Bangladesh’ that can compete effectively in the EU and US market is more important. But Bangladesh, where the focus has traditionally been on large-scale production and cost efficiency rather than innovation and brand development, a few Bangladeshi apparel manufacturers started making own brand internationally.

Inteblu is a British brand owned by Texture BD Group, which embraces the elegance and craftsmanship of authentic fashion by launching its collections in the UK market. Md Jasim Uddin is the Managing Director of Inteblu Ltd., TextureBD Ltd., and Anam Garments Ltd. Recently, Textile Focus had a conversation with him regarding the prospects and challenges of Bangladesh’s apparel export. Here are some highlights that convey thoughts and initiatives to stay competitive in the international market.

Inteblu, a truly British brand, made its debut in 2020.

Md Jasim Uddin believed that launching a Bangladeshi apparel brand targeting the European Union (EU) and United States (US) market would be a promising venture with significant potential benefits. In 2020, they launched the apparel brand Inteblu and established a warehouse in the UK to distribute garments across the entire United Kingdom. Inteblu is a unique apparel brand that offers exclusive nightwear, outwear, and loungewear with modern trends. The brand’s collection, now available in the UK market, features unique, high-quality pieces that stand out. Inteblu focuses on creating contemporary and fashionable designs for the Western market, collaborating with local designers and hiring international talent to craft trendy and appealing collections.

The steps needed to establish a successful apparel brand

To successfully establish an apparel brand in a foreign market, it is crucial to follow key steps and considerations. These include ensuring that each piece is designed in Bangladesh, reflecting the country’s rich heritage and skilled craftsmanship. The brand should have in-house designers creating unique collections, using high-quality fabrics and meticulous craftsmanship to ensure perfection in each item. It’s important to focus on offering exclusive designs for everyday wear as well as special occasions, ensuring a perfect outfit for every moment. Lastly, the brand should prioritize versatile styles and eco-friendly practices, offering fashion that respects both people and the planet, to develop a strong brand identity.

China is more advanced in developing its apparel brands

Md Jasim Uddin, the owner of Inteblu, stated that China effectively balances its role as a manufacturing hub with the development of its own brands, creating a dual advantage in the global apparel market. In comparison to Bangladesh, China is more advanced in developing its apparel brands, known for their superior quality and sustainable fashion sense. Chinese apparel brands such as Anta, Li-Ning, and Bosideng are globally recognized for their high-quality fashion attire. Their significant presence in international markets and sponsorship of major sports events and athletes has contributed to their popularity.

At present, Bangladeshi brands are less recognized globally, and they are known more for manufacturing garments for foreign brands rather than developing their own international brands. So, we should significantly invest in research and development (R&D) in the fashion and textile industry. Emphasise advancements in technology, sustainability, and design.

Market Research and Branding Need for Bangladesh

Creating a successful brand is a challenging task that involves overcoming many obstacles. According to Md Jasim Uddin, it is important to conduct market research to understand the preferences, trends, and demands of consumers in the EU and USA. Additionally, developing a strong brand identity that resonates with the western market is crucial for increasing brand visibility and should be taken seriously to build a positive image for products made in Bangladesh.

Launching targeted marketing campaigns and promotions, as well as participating in fashion shows, trade fairs, and industry events, can help to build brand awareness and attract customers, ultimately strengthening the brand image.

Product Development and Logistics and Supply Chain We need to prioritize high-quality materials and manufacturing processes because consumers in the EU and US expect durable, well-made products. It’s crucial to understand contemporary and fashionable designs, so collaborating with local designers or hiring international talent to create trendy and appealing collections is important. To attract a broader audience, we should offer a range of products, including casual wear, formal wear, and seasonal collections.

It is also important to establish an efficient supply chain with reliable logistics providers to ensure timely delivery and to set up warehouses or distribution centers within the EU and US to expedite shipping and reduce costs.
