The Institution of Textile Engineers & Technologists (ITET), Bangladesh, has expressed concern about the recent gas crisis disruption in the industry and urged the government to take immediate action. ITET said sustainable solutions are needed to protect textile and apparel operations, jobs, and export competitiveness.

In a joint statement, Engr. Md. Enayet Hossain, President, and Engr. A.S.M. Hafizur Rahman Nixon, Secretary General of ITET, highlighted that irregular gas supply and near-zero pressure have left many industrial units unable to run normal operations. Notably, the situation has forced production to plummet significantly across facilities, with several factories facing conditions that threaten temporary shutdowns.
ITET said the textile industry is a primary engine of Bangladesh’s exports, employment, and overall economic stability. Prolonged gas shortages risk crippling industrial capacity and eroding the country’s competitive standing in the international market, potentially leading to factory closures and widespread layoffs.
The organization warned that a continued supply shortfall will lead to reduced export earnings, discouraged investment, inflated production costs, and broader economic headwinds. With such disruptions, ITET noted that they carry far-reaching social and economic consequences that could hinder national growth.
ITET called on relevant ministries, gas distribution utilities, and authorities to execute a coordinated strategy to ensure an uninterrupted energy supply to industrial zones, stressing that a swift, permanent resolution to the gas crisis is critical to safeguard jobs, industrial sustainability, and economic progress.
ITET is the professional institution of textile engineers & technologists and has worked to develop the industry and support its members.
