During the meeting, the president briefed the adviser on the garment accessories and packaging sector in the country and the role of BGAPMEA. He informed her that many of BGAPMEA’s member companies have green factories and some have received awards from various international organizations. These companies are currently producing eco-friendly bags, BDP biodegradable bags, recycled poly bags, and D2W oxo-biodegradable bags. Samples of these bags were shown and handed over during the meeting. He explained that these bags can be used as alternatives to harmful single-use polybags and are relatively more affordable.

He emphasized that by raising public awareness and introducing these alternative products, the use of harmful single-use polybags can be phased out. He also proposed that eco-friendly bags could be declared the “Product of the Year” to promote wider recognition. Furthermore, he requested the adviser to send a letter or semi-official correspondence to the Ministry of Commerce regarding this matter.

He expressed concern that a ban on polybag production by 100% export-oriented factories could negatively impact exports.

The Honorable Adviser listened attentively and expressed satisfaction upon learning that environmentally friendly accessories and packaging products are being produced in the country. She agreed to instruct the Department of Environment not to carry out unnecessary inspections or interference in bonded factories. She also agreed to take steps to replace polythene bin bags with biodegradable and compostable alternatives.

Additionally, she advised BGAPMEA to send a proposal letter to the Ministry of Environment regarding the establishment of a laboratory—either independently or in collaboration with BGAPMEA—for certifying biodegradable, compostable, and similar products.

The BGAPMEA leaders were deeply moved by the adviser’s sincerity and extended their thanks to her. The adviser, in return, also thanked the BGAPMEA leaders.

Others present at the meeting included Mr. Moniruzzaman Molla (2nd Vice President), Mr. Ashraful Haque Jewel (Director), Mr. Md. Atikur Rahman (Director), Mr. ATM Kamruzzaman (Director), and Mr. Ruhidas Joddar (Office Secretary).
