The conclusion of the historic agreement between Mercosur and the European Union, announced on Friday (December 6), marks a significant turning point for the textile and apparel industry and the broader Brazilian economy. The treaty, which eliminates tariffs for 97% of manufactured goods traded between the two blocs, is set to unlock unprecedented opportunities for investment, exports, job creation, and technological advancement.

According to the Brazilian Textile and Apparel Industry Association (Abit), representing over 25,000 companies and employing 1.3 million workers, this agreement will play a vital role in promoting sustainable growth and advancing Brazil toward high-income status. Abit, a key player in the negotiations alongside the European Apparel and Textile Confederation (Euratex), emphasized that this milestone reflects successful economic diplomacy and balanced trade discussions.
Unlocking New Markets and Opportunities
The agreement opens access to the European Unionβs consumer marketβhome to 500 million people and a GDP of $22 trillion. Abit estimates that this expanded market access could create up to 300,000 formal jobs in Brazil over the next decade. Beyond job creation, the treaty is expected to drive technological exchange, leveraging the advanced innovation capabilities of both regions.
A Boost for Sustainability and Competitiveness
The benefits of the treaty extend beyond economics. Brazilβs commitment to bioeconomy initiatives, clean energy production, and greenhouse gas emission reduction aligns with the agreementβs sustainability goals. By enhancing Brazil’s global competitiveness, the country can better face domestic market competition and explore new growth avenues.
A Historic Opportunity
“The Mercosur-EU Agreement represents a historic opportunity to facilitate trade, services, and investments while fostering deeper cooperation between companies in both blocs,” said the President of Abit. “This treaty adheres to the principles of development, sustainability, and industrial modernization, ensuring mutual benefits for all participating nations.”
As implementation unfolds, the treaty promises to elevate Brazil’s position in the global textile and apparel industry, paving the way for a more dynamic and sustainable economic future.
