NTEC seminar highlights skills and career strategies for future textile professionals

A seminar titled “Beyond the Degree: Building a Successful Career in Textile & RMG” was held at Narsingdi Textile Engineering College (NTEC), focusing on career readiness, industry expectations and the skills required to build successful careers in the textile and apparel sector.

The seminar featured Sk. Mamun Ferdoush, General Manager (Marketing & Merchandising), Masco Group, who shared industry insights and practical guidance on preparing for professional careers in the textile and RMG industry. The session focused on career readiness and essential skills in the textile and apparel industry, highlighting the growing importance of analytical thinking, effective communication, technology literacy, leadership, creativity and adaptability.

According to the speaker, the evolving nature of the textile and apparel industry requires professionals to go beyond academic qualifications and continuously develop the ability to analyse information, communicate effectively, work across functions and adapt to technological and business changes.

Strategic career planning

The seminar also addressed the importance of developing a strategic career roadmap. Students were encouraged to approach career development as a continuous process involving self-assessment, lifelong learning, personal branding, practical experience and professional networking. The discussion emphasised the need for students to identify their strengths and career interests while developing the technical, interpersonal and professional competencies relevant to their desired career paths.

Internships as a bridge to industry

Internship preparation and industry exposure were also highlighted during the session. Internships were described as an important bridge between academic knowledge and practical workplace experience. The speaker noted that effective internship experiences can help students develop workplace discipline, professional confidence, practical understanding of industry operations, professional networks and stronger CVs. Students were encouraged to view internships not merely as an academic requirement but as an opportunity to gain practical exposure and understand professional workplace culture.

Job application strategies and LinkedIn

The session also covered job application strategies and LinkedIn optimisation. Students were advised to prepare concise and relevant CVs, research prospective employers before applying, connect with alumni and industry professionals, and maintain a professional online presence. The discussion highlighted the importance of building a professional profile before graduation and effectively presenting relevant skills, experiences and career interests to prospective employers.

Professional communication in the workplace

Professional communication and workplace writing formed another important part of the seminar. Professionals in the textile and apparel industry regularly coordinate with buyers, suppliers, production teams and international clients. Effective communication is therefore essential for coordination across functions and for maintaining professional relationships with different stakeholders.

The session also highlighted the importance of workplace documentation, including production reports, quality metrics and business proposals. The ability to communicate technical and business information clearly was identified as an important complement to technical expertise.

Preparing for an evolving industry

The seminar highlighted the changing expectations of textile and apparel employers. While academic qualifications remain important, professionals also need technical knowledge, practical exposure, communication skills, adaptability and continuous professional development to remain effective in an evolving industry.

For students preparing to enter the workforce, developing these competencies alongside academic studies can strengthen their transition from campus to industry and improve their readiness for the demands of the textile and RMG sector. The seminar was organised by NTEC Career Club.
