In a remarkable achievement for the country’s Ready-Made Garments (RMG) industry, Bangladesh has surpassed the milestone of 202 LEED-certified factories, with two additional facilities recently achieving Gold-level certification from the U.S. Green Building Council (USGBC).

This monumental milestone follows last month’s announcement of 200 LEED certified factories, highlighting the sector’s unwavering commitment to sustainability and environmental responsibility. Of the 202 certified factories, an impressive 73 have earned the prestigious Platinum rating, while 115 hold the Gold rating, and 10 proudly showcase the Silver rating.
The RMG industry in Bangladesh has been on an upward trajectory of sustainability in recent years, with 30 factories receiving LEED certification in 2022 alone, equally divided between Platinum and Gold ratings. Fast forward to August 2023, and the industry has continued its sustainability journey by adding another 20 certified factories in just eight months, with 13 achieving the coveted Platinum rating and 7 securing the Gold rating.
Notably, Bangladesh now stands as the home to 13 of the 15 globally highest-rated LEED Green Factories, and one of them holds the distinction of being the highest-rated LEED Green Factory globally. Additionally, there are plans in the pipeline to certify an additional 500 factories, demonstrating a strong commitment to sustainability within the RMG sector.
The RMG industry in Bangladesh has worked tirelessly to enhance workplace safety, improve workers’ well-being, and reduce its environmental impact. This transformation underscores the industry’s visionary leadership, adaptability, and commitment to positive change.
The Bangladesh Garment Manufacturers and Exporters Association (BGMEA) has played a pivotal role in driving this sustainability agenda. BGMEA’s strategic vision for 2030 is firmly anchored in economic, social, and environmental priorities, leading to a profound transformation of the industry.
To promote innovation and sustainability, BGMEA has established centers dedicated to innovation, efficiency, and occupational safety and health. The Textile Technology Business Center (TTBC) serves as a vital knowledge hub for resource efficiency and business-to-business linkages, helping factories reduce their carbon footprint. The Responsible Business Hub Unit strengthens manufacturers’ capacities to meet global due diligence standards, and a digital data platform is being developed to monitor ESG (Environmental, Social, and Governance) practices.
In addition to its commitment to social and environmental responsibility, the RMG industry in Bangladesh is prioritizing product and market diversification, value addition, skill development, design, and innovation. This shift aligns with global consumer trends that increasingly value eco-conscious products.
This journey toward sustainability has earned Bangladesh the trust of global buyers and has led to high-profile visits from prominent organizations, including George, Primark, and Associated British Foods. These visits highlight not only their satisfaction with Bangladesh’s progress but also their eagerness to deepen partnerships and expand sourcing from the country.
As Bangladesh continues its journey toward sustainability, it solidifies its unique position in the global apparel marketplace. The nation’s commitment to driving sustainable change promises a brighter future for the RMG industry, its workers, and the environment.
