The Greener Garments Initiative (GGI), one of Bangladesh’s first Energy Service Companies (ESCOs) dedicated exclusively to the ready-made garments (RMG) sector, has successfully commissioned a 455 kWp DC rooftop solar power plant at Coats Bangladesh Ltd., marking a significant step forward in the decarbonisation of industrial energy use in the country.

The project reflects a strategic collaboration between GGI and Coats Bangladesh aimed at strengthening energy resilience, reducing environmental impact, and embedding renewable energy into core manufacturing operations. Senior representatives from both organisations attended the inauguration ceremony to mark the system’s commissioning.
Coats Bangladesh was represented by Managing Director Mohammad Al Kashem, alongside senior leadership including Shami Murshed Nazir, Director, Supply Chain; Mahmudur Rahman, Manager, Sourcing; Adnan Sharif, Manager, Engineering; and Gholam Muktadir, Manager, Health, Safety & Environment (HSE).
GGI’s delegation included Aziza Sultana Mukti, Managing Director; Syed Ishtiaque Ahmed, Chief Technology Officer; and Anisa Ali, CFA, Financial Advisor—highlighting a shared commitment to integrating sustainability and climate responsibility into industrial operations.

Implemented under GGI’s Operating Expense (OPEX) model, the rooftop solar project provides Coats Bangladesh with a turnkey renewable energy solution backed by comprehensive technical oversight and lifecycle management. The collaboration underscores Coats Banglaesh’s strategic choice to partner with GGI for its proven expertise in designing, operating, and optimising industrial-scale solar assets within complex manufacturing environments.
The system has been equipped with SMA inverters and Risen Solar modules, selected to ensure high performance, durability, and operational reliability. With an installed capacity of 455 kWp, the solar plant is expected to generate approximately 491.4 MWh of renewable electricity annually, resulting in an estimated reduction of 318.4 tonnes of carbon dioxide emissions per year—equivalent to the environmental benefit of planting ~26,500 trees annually.
This installation aligns with GGI’s broader mission to scale commercially viable renewable energy solutions across Bangladesh’s garment industry. GGI is backed by the Dutch Off-Grid Renewable Energy Fund (ORE Fund), managed by One to Watch and Truvalu, and was jointly established by climate-tech company SOLshare and Heartland, the family office of global fashion brand BESTSELLER. This unique coalition enables GGI to bridge global sustainability commitments with on-the-ground industrial execution.
With the Coats Bangladesh project now operational, GGI further strengthens its position as a key enabler of industrial decarbonisation in Bangladesh’s RMG sector, supporting factories and global brands as they transition toward cleaner, more resilient, and future-ready energy systems.
While rooftop solar is a critical first step, it also marks the beginning of a longer decarbonisation journey toward integrated solutions spanning clean power, energy storage, efficiency, and resource management—an approach that sits at the core of GGI’s evolving Decarbonisation-as-a-Service offering. GGI invites additional factories to participate in a commercially sustainable decarbonisation pathway and encourages global brands to actively support this transition.
