
A seminar titled “Future Prospects and Challenges of the Garments Washing Sector” was held yesterday at the seminar hall of Dhaka University of Engineering and Technology (DUET). The event was organized by the students of DUET’s Textile Engineering Department.
The seminar was graced by the presence of Professor Dr. Md. Abdul Hannan, Head of the Textile Engineering Department at DUET, as the Chief Guest. The keynote speaker was Engr. Mehedi Hasan, the founding president of the Bangladesh Garments Washing Technologists Foundation (BGWTF) and General Manager of Sterling Laundry Limited.

Special guest Mr. Saman Wasalatilaka, an honorary member of the Sri Lankan Association of Bangladesh and General Manager of Sterling Laundry Limited, was also in attendance. Other notable guests included Mr. Ibne Rezwan, Senior Chemist of Sterling Laundry Limited and Publicity Secretary of BGWTF, as well as Mr. Arifur Rahman, Managing Director of F2G Technologies Limited, the event’s sponsor.
During the seminar, participants engaged in a two-hour discussion focusing on the current challenges facing the textile sector in Bangladesh, including fabric tearing, lackra issues, gas shortages in factories, and potential water scarcity in the future. The speakers emphasized strategies to sustain and develop the sector while encouraging students to contribute their expertise to the country’s progress.
The event concluded with the distribution of honorary crests to the distinguished guests and certificates and gifts to students who excelled in the quiz competition.
This seminar highlighted the importance of collective efforts and innovation in addressing the evolving challenges of the garments washing industry and nurturing a skilled workforce for the future.
