SHIMA SEIKI Announces Partnership with Lonati

Leading computerized flat knitting innovator SHIMA SEIKI MFG., LTD. of Wakayama, Japan (hereinafter referred to as “SHIMA SEIKI”) is collaborating with Lonati S.p.A. of Brescia, Italy (hereinafter referred to as “Lonati”) to advance digitalization and sustainable product development within the sock industry.

This partnership creates synergy by combining the software solutions of both companies—APEXFiz®, a design software developed and marketed by SHIMA SEIKI, and ORION, a programming software developed and marketed by Lonati. Together, they aim to reduce the industry’s reliance on conventional physical sample creation.

In the fashion industry—and especially in the sock sector—it is common practice to develop physical samples for design validation and production planning. However, this traditional method presents several challenges, including resource and labor waste, high sampling and material costs, and time delays that affect market launch schedules.

To overcome these issues, 3D Virtual Sampling has gained attention as an effective alternative. This technique allows design evaluations to be carried out without physical samples, enabling faster and more efficient prototyping. The result is a significant reduction in both time and cost, along with a minimized environmental impact. Additionally, creating products that better meet market demands helps enhance competitiveness.

APEXFiz® from SHIMA SEIKI is design software that includes 3D virtual sampling functionality for knitted items. It has been widely adopted and highly praised by companies in the sock industry. The software enables designers to visualize sock concepts in real-time and obtain immediate feedback. A specialized version—APEXFiz® Design-Sox—focused specifically on sock design, is currently in development for future release.

Meanwhile, ORION, part of Lonati’s UNLIMITEX® suite, is a powerful programming tool that allows users to technically verify data in 3D. This helps to identify and resolve issues proactively at every stage—from programming through manufacturing.

Both ORION and APEXFiz® Design-Sox are scheduled for release in June 2025.

Together, APEXFiz® and ORION optimize the virtual sampling process by integrating the design and production workflow. This seamless integration enables quicker time-to-market and efficient delivery of high-quality products. The innovative system resulting from the collaboration between SHIMA SEIKI and Lonati is poised to transform the sock industry, driving new business opportunities and enhancing competitive edge.
