Bangladesh has become a major player in the global denim market, establishing itself as the leading supplier of denim garments to the US and EU. This success story is driven by a combination of factors, including significant investments, a focus on innovation, and a commitment to sustainability.
Shin Shin Group has been pioneering sustainable jeans production in the country, exporting to globally recognized fashion brands and retailers.
Recently, the team at Textile Focus spoke with Mohammad Sohel Sadat, Chairman of Shin Shin Group and former director of BGMEA, to discuss the current state of the denim industry, the challenges it faces, and the strengths of Shin Shin Group.

Q: What is the current scenario of Bangladesh’s denim industry?
A: Bangladesh has solidified its position in the global denim market as a leading supplier of denim garments to the US and EU. Today, Bangladesh is the world’s second-largest exporter of denim clothing, accounting for 22% of global exports in 2022, according to the WTO. This translates to an annual export value of nearly $8 billion, as reported by BGMEA. According to Statista, the global denim market is projected to be worth around $95 billion by 2030, indicating substantial growth potential for Bangladesh’s denim industry. However, we have seen a slowdown in our denim product growth recently due to the global economic downturn and the impacts of the Russia-Ukraine war. Additionally, countries like Pakistan and Vietnam are emerging as strong competitors in the denim export market. To overcome these challenges, Bangladesh must focus on industry stability, ensure uninterrupted power supply, and improve efficiency at our ports and relevant government bodies, such as the NBR and customs. Embracing automation, upskilling workers, and making data-driven decisions can also strengthen our competitiveness.
Q: As a leading apparel exporter, how is Shin Shin Group ensuring sustainability in jeans production?
A: Shin Shin Group’s sustainability initiatives cover nearly all aspects of responsible production. The Group has achieved 300 kW of green energy production and plans to expand these green efforts. Of our five factories, one is LEED Gold certified, and we intend to gradually certify the others. Since our other factories already have most of the necessary systems in place, obtaining these certifications should not be overly challenging. For washing, we use a biochemical system and are steadily transitioning toward biological processes. Additionally, we employ energy-efficient, modern machinery and innovative methods throughout our production processes. Recently, we launched a “Say No to Plastic” campaign, banning plastic bottles in our corporate office, with plans to extend this initiative to all offices and factories.
Shin Shin is also active in CSR, offering scholarship programs for workers’ children and educational support for university students. Our partnership with Wagely, a financial wellness platform, allows workers instant access to earned wages. Through a digital app, workers can withdraw up to 60% of their monthly wages in advance when needed. Furthermore, we’ve introduced biometric-enabled sanitary pad vending machines outside each female restroom in our factories, offering free sanitary pads for workers. As a member of the ILO Better Work program, Shin Shin Group promotes a decent work environment at all our facilities. Additionally, our commitment to inclusivity provides barrier-free access for all, including persons with disabilities, third-gender individuals, and people of short stature. We also offer fair-price shops, health centers, and daycare facilities for workers’ children.
Q: This is Shin Shin Group’s first time exhibiting at the 17th Bangladesh Denim Expo. What will you present to attract global buyers?
A: The Bangladesh Denim Expo is not only our country’s premier exhibition but also one of the world’s most prestigious denim shows. I would like to extend my thanks to Mr. Mostafiz Uddin, Founder of Bangladesh Denim Expo, whose efforts have significantly contributed to the growth of Bangladesh’s denim industry.
The Expo offers us a platform to showcase our strengths to the global fashion industry, and we will present our latest developments and innovations in denim.
Shin Shin Group’s newest addition is Suad Garments Industries Limited. With 18 production lines and an annual capacity of 7.2 million pieces, this vertical factory specializes in producing blazers, jackets, suits, women’s fluid dresses, formal wear, and professional workwear for both men and women. At the Expo, we will also display these tailored products, as the next growth potential in Bangladesh’s apparel industry lies in diversified and value-added offerings.
