SM Sourcing, a Bangladesh-based 100% export-oriented garments manufacturer, has been declared the world’s top USGBC (LEED) Platinum-rated Green building factory, achieving an impressive score of 106 out of a possible 110. This triumph surpasses the previous record held by Green Textiles Ltd (Unit 4), another prominent textile factory in Bangladesh, which scored 104 points.

Situated in Gazipur, SM Sourcing, established in 2013, has set a new standard for environmental sustainability in the global textile industry. Under the visionary leadership of Mirza Shams Mahmud Shakti, CEO of SM Sourcing, the company’s commitment to eco-friendly practices is unparalleled.
Mirza Shams Mahmud Shakti expressed pride in elevating Bangladesh’s global standing and outlined the key initiatives that contributed to this achievement. “Our focus on sustainability extends to innovative practices, such as a rainwater storing system under the garden on the factory premises and its diversified usage. Additionally, we have implemented a rooftop solar power system,” stated Mirza Shams.

He emphasized the global challenge of reducing carbon emissions and highlighted the company’s dedication to environmental well-being. “Despite being a garment factory, our commitment to our planet’s safety is uncompromising. Going Green not only reduces energy and water usage but also enhances indoor air quality and employee productivity,” added Mirza Shams.
Mr. Ananta Ahmed (International Green Building Expert, USGBC Faculty, LEED AP BD+C, LEED AP EB O+M, LEED AP ID+C, LEED AP HOME, LEED AP ND Principal LEED Consultant & Managing Director of 360 TSL, played a crucial role in the success of this project. Ahmed expressed readiness to offer Green Partnership & Turnkey solution services, aiming to make establishments 25%+ more energy efficient and workforces 20% more productive.

Bangladesh’s textile and apparel sector has witnessed remarkable progress, with 54 of the world’s top 100-ranked factories now located in the country. Out of 206 LEED-certified factories, Bangladesh boasts 76 Platinum-rated and 116 Gold-rated establishments. Notably, 54 out of the globally top 100 highest-rated LEED green factories are now in Bangladesh, with 19 out of the globally top 21 LEED-certified factories also hailing from the country.
Faruque Hassan, president of the Bangladesh Garment Manufacturers and Exporters Association (BGMEA), commended SM Sourcing’s achievement, stating that it is a significant acknowledgment of the company’s leadership in eco-friendly practices on a global scale.
