Recently, Team Textile Focus met A.M. Abdullah Al Mamun Uzzal, General Manager and Head of Production of Laundry Industries Ltd. He shared the recent scenario of the washing sector, challenges, progress, and sustainability. A brief conversation is given below.

Previous Industry Scenario:

The current state of the garment industry was not the same as in the past. Previously, there was no proper process, no laws and regulations, and very little focus on compliance. At that time, this industry was not widely accepted in a structured and organized manner. However, after overcoming many challenges, the industry has established its position. In the past, washing plants were usually built under tin roofs and were considered to be in relatively unclean environments. However, we must acknowledge that the washing plant is the most vital sector in the garment industry. In this sector, practical experience is more important than theoretical knowledge, making even the most complex shade-matching tasks—over 70%—more manageable.

Present Industry Scenario:

With time, various changes have occurred in the textile industry, along with shifts in people’s tastes and fashion trends. Those currently involved in this industry, earning degrees from various universities and working with foreign buyers, are performing well in this sector, which is gradually progressing. Overall, the industry has an extensive workforce resource, and in the coming days, their intelligence and hard work will help push the industry even further. Despite facing numerous challenges, Bangladesh’s garment industry is advancing day by day. I would like to request the younger generation involved in this sector to work hard with honesty. They should be willing to learn and acquire knowledge while eliminating ego, as it is one of the biggest obstacles to progress.

Sustainability & Technological Advancement:

In the industry’s early days, production was done using specific machines and local chemicals. However, due to industry upgrades, sustainability is now being maintained by using low-liquor ratio machines that reduce water usage, as well as ozone machines that create washing effects without using water. These advancements help us fulfill our responsibility to protect the environment while enabling us to use multifunctional chemicals. Technological advancements have eliminated the need for desizing, reducing one process and saving water, cost, time, and electricity. Currently, all our industry resources are imported, as we are unable to produce them domestically. As a result, even for minor chemicals, we depend on foreign countries. High-efficiency machines are also not locally produced, making us reliant on external sources.

If we had a strong backward linkage in our country, there would be no reason for us to lag behind globally. I urge the Bangladesh government to take the necessary steps to invest in research and development so that we can utilize domestic resources and contribute more effectively to this sector.
