BUFT Textile Club hosts workshop on advance sewing thread and technology
A workshop with the title ‘Advanced sewing thread and technology’ was held on 16 July 23 at BGMEA University of Fashion & Technology (BUFT), Nishatnagar, Turag, Dhaka, organized by BUFT Textile Club.
Anita Buzengeiger – Mahncke, Global Director, Technical advisory services (TAS) at Amann Group was present as the key note speaker where she spoke about the advanced sewing thread technology and showed how Amann has taken an important step on the way to technical advancement, digitalization and sustainability for reducing resource consumption.

In the workshop, Md.Rokonuzzaman, Managing Director, Amann Bangladesh Limited, was present as Chief Guest, and Mir Ehsanul Huq, Commercial Director, Arshad Hasan, Business Development Director; Prof. Dr. Engr. Abu Bakr Siddique, Dean Faculty of Textile Engineering, Director R&D, BUFT, and Prof.Dr.Md Adul Jalil, Treasurer (Acting Pro Vice-Chancellor BUFT) were also present as special guests.
The Chief Guest, Md. Rokonuzzaman, delivered his special thanks to the organizer of the workshop. In his speech, he mentioned that AMANN has been a leading international manufacturer of sewing thread since 1854 as the company is continuously concentrating on sustainability and innovation. He also highlighted that under the Hanns A. Pielenz foundation of AMANN -a full-pledge scholarship abroad and career opportunity, three students from Bangladesh completed their graduation from a textile university in Germany and immediately after the graduation they started working in AMANN Headquarters in Germany. He expressed extending the existing scholarship program on a broader scale to cover more students from different universities in Bangladesh.

All the speakers highlighted that the sector’s success can be attributed to reducing the gap between curriculum and industry, knowing the advanced technology used in the production process, and research and innovation that can enhance an individual’s quality to the international standard among textile graduates.
The keynote speaker, Anita Buzengeiger, presented details of advanced technology about sewing thread, its types and quality, as well as how to identify problems that are related to sewing thread or something else. In a slideshow presentation she showed how Amann guarantees the best quality, what makes Amann’s services so special, what Amann’s technical advisory service (TAS) is and its testing methods.

The audience in the workshop.
She informed the audience about various seam quality and factors like seam strength, elongation, surface feel, abrasion resistance, optics, care properties, product specification, and cost, all of which depend on the quality of the sewing thread. Because only sewing threads can perform the maximum level of product performance while end users are using them. In this regard, Amann ensures the best quality sewing thread for Bangladesh and world-wide apparel production.
Amann offers various products such as Universal, Mercifil, for Spun, Saba, Rasant for core spun, Serafil, Onyx for continuous filament and Sabatex, Saba soft for continuous filament texturized to provide quality sewing thread that ensures correct thread size and weight, breaking strength, per meter sewing thread with correct properties, shrinkage, shade and color fastness of the thread, consistency during sewing, a smooth surface and resistance to abrasion.

Anita showed how sewing needles can be a reasoning factor for the bad performance during sewing the process and in most cases, how people wrongly judge the sewing thread to be of bad quality without proper investigation. To determine the right needle size for right the thread size Amann provides a technical data sheet and ensures proper matching of thread with the correct needle size.
She mentioned the seam puckering issues and explained how people fail to maintain quality seam without puckering. But unknowingly they point out and sometime believe that sewing thread could be one of the reasons for seam puckering. In this regard, an example has been given that how technically and by proper machine adjustment is possible to avoid the problem.

Anita Buzengeiger and Md. Rokonuzzaman is receiving a crest in recognition and appreciation for the knowledge-worthy seminar.
Digitalization of color allows digital color matching from 100,000 Amann’s color that are saving time and cost procedure. Reduces the impact on the environment because it requires less physical samples, less shipping and less dye-to-match-leftover material that needed to be destroyed.
Anita’s presentation also showed the innovation of Sliver-tech by Amann and the wide-ranging applications of conductive threads. Sliver-tech can transfer electricity and data and thus provide information about the stress on components, temperature or humidity. Embroidered conductive threads on car seats as touch switches or incorporated into the sole of a shoe, intelligent threads could replace raw material-intensive plastic switches and cables.

Conductive threads can also offer advantages in medical technology: as an essential component of pain relief belts, the use of Amann’s conductive thread Silver-tech enables electrical impulses to be transmitted to the nerve endings, which has a positive effect on the patient’s pain memory. Besides new fields of application, various processing methods also play an important role.
At the end of the presentation, Anita discussed the outlook of textile’s future and sewing thread developments. 2019 – Pre- Covid period the textile trend was ‘Smart Textiles’, 2020 – while Covid most projects were ‘on hold’ also due to ‘supply chain problems’ and since from 2021 the most concerning factor appeared as ‘sustainability’. In line with the new trend and from the ground of sustainability Amann is working to develop sustainability in its process and production.
