Textile Focus: Could you please share the current scenario of the RMG Sector?
Roman Mia: The RMG sector in Bangladesh stands as a testament to the country’s industrial prowess and resilience. As of now, Bangladesh is the second-largest exporter of garments in the world after China. This industry contributes significantly to the nation’s GDP and provides employment to over 4 million people where the majority of workers are women. The sector’s success can be attributed to its ability to offer competitive pricing, quality production, and timely deliveries which have solidified its reputation on the global stage.
Textile Focus : What are the challenges you are facing ?
Roman Mia: In the apparel business challenges are every time . The current crisis in Bangladesh’s garment industry and port operations underscores the fragility of supply chains in the face of political instability. “As the country strives to restore order and build a new democracy, economic stability is essential … the garment industry has a major role to play in stabilizing the country and ensuring a regular income for workers.” At this time we are facing a financial crisis from Banks ,couldn.t open LC,Shiiping cost higher, customes and logistic. Reducing customs clearance times from 10-15 days to a more competitive duration is essential. Keeping customs operations open six days a week, including Saturdays, and employing digital systems to minimize manual bottlenecks will improve efficiency.
Textile Focus: How BGBA is working for RMG sector Development?
Roman Mia: Garment buying houses works as a middleman between factories and brands/buyers. We are a service-based sector. The role of buying houses in the country’s economy is not less. The export income of the ready-made garment sector is said to be $47 billion, and small factories also deserve credit for this export income. After the newly elected board of BGBA ,we are working with all stakeholders .We want to empower BGBA. BGBA is on the path to obtaining the permit for direct export, a significant milestone that will streamline processes and boost efficiency. , BGBA is actively preparing, as we will focus on bolstering the branding and reputation of BGBA.Our focus is on continuous improvement and ensuring the best possible representation for all members.”Very Soon,we will relocate BGBA’s office to a new place with larger space. Implementation of an easy and friendly membership registration and renewal process with a digital payment system. Upgrade website with modern features.”
Under the leadership our board,
As for the long-term plan within the next 2 years, we will ensure an easy, faster registration and renewal process with the Textile Department (DoT). In addition, highlighting Advance Income Tax (AIT) – as the garment factories provide much less AIT. So, we will request urgent policy support from the govt. and propose a uniform tax rate on export earnings – which will boost orders and grow our economy. Also, we will demand the Ministry of Commerce to give top exporters the CIP recognition for our sector.
Textile Focus: How do you see the future prospects of BD RMG Sector ?
Roman Mia : The future of the RMG sector in Bangladesh looks promising. With increasing investments in automation and digitalization, the industry is poised to enhance its productivity and efficiency. The adoption of advanced technologies such as AI and IoT in manufacturing processes will not only improve quality but also reduce lead times to make Bangladesh an even more attractive destination for global retailers.
Fiber diversification is crucial too. Side by side, we must explore value-added apparel like technical textiles, higher SMV products are crucial to increase our business growth potential.”
At this time we need to focus more on Product Diversification and Innovation:
● Diversify Product Offerings: Expanding into higher-value segments such as sportswear, technical apparel, and specialized garments will reduce the industry’s dependence on low-cost, high-volume production.
● Innovation in Fabric and Materials: Developing eco-friendly and sustainable fabrics will not only meet global standards but also position Bangladesh as a leader in sustainable apparel.
