Bangladesh has made significant progress in manufacturing garment accessories and packaging materials, meeting 90 percent of the demand of the export-oriented garment industry. Entrepreneurs have recognized the huge potential of this backward linkage industry to become a primary sourcing hub for global buyers.
According to the entrepreneur, Bangladesh is a matured country in many of the garment accessories items as the industry has made an impressive stride in the last two decades.
Since 1998, Union Label & Accessories Ltd. has grown from a family business, to a market leader, producing garment Trims & Accessories and sustainable packaging, offering sate-of-art production solution at Gazipur and providing logistic service as backward linkage of the garment industry.
Md. Jahangir Hossain Molla, Managing Director of Union Group said an interview, Our motto is to ensure one-stop support and authentic quality to our customers. This company believes in continuous changes and developments on product quality and value addition.
We believe in sustainability and by inspiring this core philosophy we do best care of our PEOPLE, PLACE “We are self-sufficient in accessories. We have a lot of prospects in this sector,” said
The garment accessories business has big potential in the country as China is no longer interested in this low-cost business, added Md. Jahangir Hossain Molla.
Jahangir Hossain Molla remarked, “As one of the oldest companies, we continue to face numerous challenges. Despite our longstanding presence in the industry, we still lack a gas connection and rely on generators for production, which significantly increases our overall production costs. We are contending with low product prices, high production costs, elevated shipping expenses, high bank interest rates, short lead times, and high taxes. These are the main challenges in the backward linkage sector. To address electricity issues, we are planning to implement solar power in our factory,” added Mr. Jahangir.
He further stated, “Production costs are rising while prices are falling, presenting an additional challenge. As manufacturers, it is crucial for the government to support young entrepreneurs by providing low-interest loans to facilitate further investment. Currently, we import raw materials from abroad, but to reduce costs, it is imperative to establish local raw material factories. Moreover, the government must ensure an uninterrupted supply of gas and electricity.”
Our future plan is to make some materials (especially environmentally sustainable) locally to avoid foreign dependencies. We will expand our marketing also through buyer nominations for direct exports,he added. By 2025, sustainability is expected to play a momentous role in the trims and accessories industry, adding value in several ways. The industry will witness initiatives like eco-friendly materials, circular economy practices, transparent supply chains, social responsibility, innovative technologies and consumer education and engagement.
