Although Uniqlo Japan’s May sales declined 19.7 per cent year-on-year, the brand fared better than many other international chains worldwide whose 100 per cent of shops in some countries were closed. About 20 per cent of stores in Japan temporarily closed last month. With Japan ‘s annual Golden Week holiday and its own anniversaries, it was therefore unable to perform its daily sales promotions. The brand’s comparable sales fell by 18.1 per cent, both figures including its online operations.
The company has announced good sales of its summer collections, however, and its business-open stores have continued to see healthy sales. Furthermore, e-commerce sales of the company rose substantially in May.
