The jute industry in Bangladesh holds significant historical and economic importance, being one of the world’s largest producers of raw jute and jute products. Often referred to as the “Golden Fibre,” jute was once the country’s primary export commodity.

Today, there is renewed global interest in jute due to its eco-friendly and biodegradable nature, making it a sustainable alternative to plastic. Bangladesh has strong opportunities in this sector through product diversification, such as jute composites, textiles, geo-textiles, and innovations like the “Sonali Bag.”

Government support, including mandatory jute packaging laws and export incentives, further boosts the industry. However, challenges remain, such as outdated machinery, price volatility, and competition from synthetic materials. With increased investment in modernization, research, and global marketing, the jute industry in Bangladesh can be revitalized to meet growing global demand for green products while providing employment and contributing to rural development.

To address these issues and strengthen global competitiveness, USB Certification held a high-level meeting with the Bangladesh Jute Mills Corporation (BJMC) at Bangladesh Secretariat on May 7, 2025. Senior representatives from both organizations participated, including Mr. Salim Khan Chairman (Additional Secretary) from BJMC and, on behalf of USB Certification, Founder & CEO Nesrin Serin, Technical and Assurance Director Emre Metin, Bangladesh Country Manager Hasnat Kabir, and Integrity Manager Mokarrom Alahe.

The meeting focused on enhancing collaboration to promote sustainability within the jute and textile sector. Key discussion points included:

  • Strengthening compliance and international certification standards
  • Promoting environmentally responsible and sustainable production practices
  • Improving supply chain traceability across the jute value chain
  • Raising stakeholder awareness on the importance of compliance and sustainability
  • Exploring the potential scope of introducing Regenevate (a regenerative product standard) in the jute industry

Both parties reaffirmed their commitment to international certification benchmarks and discussed opportunities for capacity building across the industry.

This partnership marks a significant step toward advancing a more sustainable and globally competitive jute and textile sector in Bangladesh.
