The seminar took place on Saturday (May 17) from 3 PM to 6 PM at the BUTEX auditorium. The event’s chief guest was the Vice-Chancellor of BUTEX, Professor Dr. Md. Zulhash Uddin, and it was presided over by Engr. Ehsanul Karim Kaiser, the convener of ITET’s interim committee.

Special guests included MD Shamsuzzaman (CIP), Engr. A T M Sham Uddin Khan (both co-conveners of the interim committee), Engr. Enayet Hossain (Member Secretary), and Engineer S. M. Hafizur Rahman Nixon, Executive Director of RH Corporation.

In his speech, Professor Dr. Md. Zulhash Uddin said, “Textile is a major sector with plenty of opportunities for work. I hope students will gain valuable insights from this seminar. Our university has around 4,000 students. Since government facilities are limited, I urge organizations like this to step forward.”

In his welcome address, Engr. Enayet Hossain stated that ITET is a non-political organization aiming to reach everyone. “Through organizing national and social programs, it is moving forward. We have appealed to the government for 50 acres of land for BUTEX. Our main goal is to highlight the country’s RMG sector.”

Speakers at the seminar discussed the current state of Bangladesh’s ready-made garment (RMG) industry, future prospects, sustainable development strategies, eco-friendly production systems, and ways to remain competitive in the global market. They emphasized the importance of appropriate policies, technological integration, and skilled human resources to drive sustainable progress in the RMG sector.

At a recent gathering of textile professionals and students, Engr. Tarun Kumar Mistry, Chief Operating Officer of Esquire Group, delivered an inspiring keynote on the future direction of Bangladesh’s Ready-Made Garment (RMG) sector. He emphasized that sustainable growth and global competitiveness rely heavily on fostering innovation, nurturing leadership, and encouraging problem-solving at every level.

“To truly stand out in the global market,” Engr. Tarun asserted, “we must build a culture of innovation at every level of our operations.” He urged both seasoned professionals and fresh graduates to take initiative in addressing industry challenges creatively. He also stressed the importance of developing local leadership to reduce dependency on foreign expertise, stating, “Our goal should be to see capable Bangladeshis in all top leadership roles, not just on the factory floor.”

Engr. Tarun also highlighted the need to empower the next generation by equipping them with both technical know-how and leadership skills. He encouraged graduates to build networks with industry veterans and pursue their careers with purpose and confidence. “We must also give them the leadership abilities to help our companies achieve greater success,” he added, drawing a clear link between leadership development and industry progress.

Following this, Engr. Md. Nashirul Islam, Senior Lead for ESHS at SQ Group, presented on the theme “Roadmap Towards Sustainability & Career Opportunity Analysis.” His talk broke down the concept of sustainability in the textile sector, explaining its significance in today’s global market. From compliance with international standards to responsible chemical use and lifecycle thinking, he painted a comprehensive picture of sustainable practices.

He spotlighted the growing job market tied to sustainability, including roles in research, project management, supply chain optimization, and stakeholder engagement. “The real value of working in Sustainability,” Engr. Nashirul noted, “is the freedom to think creatively and make those ideas happen, driving positive change throughout the supply chain.” He emphasized that sustainability careers offer professional growth while contributing to global efforts focused on People, Planet, and Profit.

Lastly, Engr. Shafiul Alam Palash, Country Manager of Ricci Chemicals, gave an engaging talk titled “Sustainability Is The New Luxury in Textiles.” He proposed that environmental responsibility is becoming a hallmark of quality in fashion. Referencing Patagonia’s “Don’t Buy This Jacket” campaign, he highlighted how leading brands are shifting consumer mindsets toward longer-lasting, responsibly used garments.

Engr. Palash showcased examples such as the resale and upcycling markets, and companies like Nudie Jeans that offer free repairs to extend product life. “We need to move away from simply buying, wearing, and throwing things away,” he said, “and start thinking in a circular way.” He shared compelling data on pollution reduction through garment longevity and urged the industry to adopt more circular business models. Together, these sessions underscored a shared vision: Bangladesh’s RMG sector can lead globally by championing innovation, growing local leadership, and embracing sustainability as both a necessity and a strategic advantage.
