Textile Focus:  Could you share with us the current status of Glamour Dresses Ltd and what’s your specialty?

ABM Sakkaf: Glamour Dresses Limited (GDL) is the newest concern of Textown Group. The factory commenced operations in 2020. Specializing in a diverse array of outerwear, our product range encompasses Quilted Jackets, Padded Jackets, Parkas, Fleece Jackets, Overcoats, Windbreakers, Duffle Coats, Herrington Coats, Skiwear, Rainwear, and Workwear.

Given the factory was new, we spent a lot of time last year focusing on production efficiency, operational excellence and compliance standards. We have seen very good responses from the buyers where they are looking to move this product category into Bangladesh. This is very good for the country.

Navigating the challenges of the past year, we successfully welcomed two new customers, with few more in the pipeline slated to complete onboarding next month. GDL is an evolving project, and our current monthly output ranges between 160,000 to 200,000 pieces. Looking ahead, our plans include doubling our capacity by 2024, with a vision of completing the building by 2025. This expansion aims to incorporate 60+ production lines, contingent upon the continued support from our valued customers and an improving global situation.

As we tread this exciting path, our commitment to excellence remains unwavering, ensuring that Glamour Dresses Limited contributes significantly to the growth and reputation of Bangladesh in the international outerwear market.

Textile Focus: How do you see the current scenario of the Bangladesh RMG Sector?

ABM Sakkaf: The current landscape of Bangladesh’s RMG sector is very challenging and competitive but also presents a unique set of opportunities.

Costs for the industry have been escalating in recent years, notably in gas and electricity, compounded by recent wage hikes, creating a formidable backdrop. Despite these challenges, international buyers are not increasing their prices accordingly but instead we are facing price competition from our neighboring competitors which in turn builds pressure on us to reduce our price.

As we navigate this intricate landscape, the realization dawns that our industry’s competitiveness hinges not only on cost management but also on optimizing the efficiency of our workforce. Bangladesh has room for improvement in maximizing manpower productivity, with a focus on leveraging automation and upskilling programs to elevate overall efficiency.

Diversifying our product categories emerges as a promising strategy. Traditionally perceived as a hub for mass-produced low-value items, Bangladesh is successfully shifting gears by venturing into high-value segments like Outerwear, Activewear, and Lingerie. This strategic pivot not only broadens our market footprint but also enhances our export potential.

The endorsement of Bangladesh through positive branding is drawing the attention of esteemed international brands such as Hugo Boss and Michael Kors. This influx of prestigious labels underscores the industry’s solid foundation, hinting at a future where more luxury brands might want to move.

However, staying ahead demands a proactive approach to imminent challenges. The impending lifting of GSP and the UN’s emphasis on sustainability goals require a strategic organizational response. With a commitment to continuous improvement, we are preparing ourselves one step at a time.

Textile Focus:  The young generations now take the lead in the RMG sector, how do you evaluate this?

ABM Sakkaf: Younger generation coming into the Ready-Made Garment sector of Bangladesh marks a pivotal moment in our industry’s evolution. We owe a debt of gratitude to the hard work and dedication of our predecessors who laid the foundation for what has become a crucial national asset driving our economy.

Stepping into this legacy is both an honor and a responsibility. As we learn from the wealth of experience that the previous generation generously shares, it becomes apparent that the RMG sector is not just a business but a cornerstone of our nation’s economic prosperity. We must ensure its sustained growth and flourishing. The open-mindedness and welcoming nature of the previous generation in sharing their past experiences and insights have proven invaluable. Their mentorship allows us to make more informed decisions and navigate the industry’s challenges. By seamlessly blending their wealth of experience with our innovative ideas, I am confident that we can collectively achieve remarkable milestones, ensuring the continued success and global prominence of the Bangladeshi RMG sector.
