TIBS organized Memorial Lecture for late Engr. A. S. M. Shahid

Textile Institute Bangladesh Section (TIBS) organized a Memorial Lecture for the late Engr. A. S. M. Shahid on 18 May 2024 at Club Notredamians Bangladesh Limited, Banani, Dhaka. 

The lecture shed light on the life and activities of former Chairman of TIBS Engr. A. S. M. 

Shahid, especially his contributions to the Textile and Apparel Industry in Bangladesh. Mr. A.S.M Shahid expired on 29th January 2009.

Prof. Dr. Mustafizur Rahman, Prof. Engr. Mashud Ahmed, Engr. Kazi Salauddin Iqbal, Prof. Engr. Fakhrul Hassan Murad, Engr. M. R. Jamil Tipu and Engr. Mohammad Ashad Hossain, Chairman, TED, IEB was present as distinguished speaker while Prof. Dr. Engr. Ayub Nabi Khan, Chairman of TIBS has been on chair in the program. The entire program was encored by Dr. Engr. Md. Kamrul Hasan. 

In the memorial lecture Prof. Dr. Mustafizur Rahman said “We gathered here today to honor and recall the memory of a remarkable individual, an engineer whose integrity, dedication, and passion for industrial development in the textile sector left an indelible mark on all who had the privilege of knowing him. Engr. A. S. M. Shahid was not just an engineer; he was the epitome of what it means to be a true professional. Throughout his career, he embodied the highest standards of honesty, ethics, and excellence. His contributions to the field were significant, but it was his unwavering commitment to doing what was right, even when it was not easy, that truly set him apart.”

Engr. Mashud Ahmed mentioned that from the earliest days of his career, Engr. A. S. M. Shahid showed a keen understanding of the importance of integrity in textile engineering. He believed that an engineer’s work was not just about technical skill, but about innovation, reliability, and trustworthiness. His work always reflected his meticulous attention to detail and his relentless pursuit of quality. He never cut corners or compromised on his principles, no matter the pressures or challenges he faced.

Engr. Quazi Nurul Islam said in his remark “One of the most striking aspects of Engr. A. S. M. Shahid’s character was his dedication to mentorship. He understood that the future of Bangladesh textile engineering is depended on the next generation of engineers, and so he took it upon himself to guide, support, and inspire young professionals. His office door was always open, and he never hesitated to share his knowledge and experience. He taught by example, showing that honesty and integrity were the cornerstones of a successful and fulfilling career.”

Prof. Engr. Fakhrul Hassan Murad expressed his gratitude and said that Engr. A. S. M. Shahid’s legacy was found in his both personal and professional life where he had a lives in touched. Colleagues, clients, and students all knew him as someone they could trust implicitly. His word was his bond, and his handshake was as binding as any contract. In a world where shortcuts and expediency are often tempting, he stood as a beacon of what it means to be a true textile engineer.

Engr. M. R. Jamil Tipu said as we remember Engr. A. S. M. Shahid today, let us reflect on the values he championed. Let us strive to uphold the standards of honesty, integrity, and excellence that he exemplified. His life reminds us that textile engineering is not just a profession but a real challenge, one that requires a steadfast commitment to the highest innovative and adaptation of new technology.

In closing remarks Prof. Dr. Engr. Ayub Nabi Khan addressed “let us take inspiration from A.S.M Shahid’s life and work. Let us honor his memory by continuing to build a world where engineering serves the greater industry in Bangladesh, where everyone has to undertake with the same care and dedication that he demonstrated every day.”

Late Mr. A.S.M Shahid was born in 1938 in Bancharampur under greater Comilla district of Bangladesh, who completed B.Sc. and M.Sc. in Textile Engineering from Osaka University of Japan in 1961-63. In Pakistan regime he was working in Pakistan Industrial Credit and Investment Corporation and was heading the Cotton Textile Division of East Pakistan Industrial Development Corporation. He was the first graduate textile engineer of Bangladesh. After the independence of Bangladesh, he contributed a lot in forming and reforming Bangladesh Textile Mills Corporation.
